New PicoSource Pulse Generators!

The new PicoSource PG900 Series differential pulse generators can stimulate a transmission path, device or network with a broad-spectrum signal in a single instant. These signals are invaluable for making high-speed broadband measurements in many fields such as time-domain reflectometry, semiconductor testing, gigabit interconnect and port testing, and in radar systems.

Despite the dominance of high-speed differential data in today's digital, computing, interconnect and telecommunications systems, it was hard to find cost-effective, fast-transition differential pulse generators... until now!

Highlights of the new PicoSource PG900 Series differential pulse generators:

  • 60 ps edge step recovery diode outputs, amplitude adjustable up to 6 V (PG911)
  • 40 ps edge tunnel diode outputs, fixed > 200 mV amplitude (PG912)
  • Dual-technology model (PG914) with both types of output
  • Differential outputs with programmable deskew in 1 ps steps
  • Signal characteristics specified in detail
  • USB-connected
  • Graphical control software (for Microsoft Windows) included

Focus on: DrDAQ

DrDAQ is a low-budget data logger and oscilloscope interface that offers amazing value for money. Bristling with measurement inputs, sensors and drive outputs, it can be used as a hobbyist's toolkit, an educator's classroom demonstrator and a scientist's general-purpose measuring instrument. Here are its main capabilities at a glance:

  • 6 inputs: 100 kHz oscilloscope, pH/redox sensor, resistance and 3 external sensor inputs (sensors available separately)
  • 3 built-in sensors: microphone (waveform and sound level), light, temperature
  • 2 outputs: RGB LED, 20 kHz function generator/arbitrary waveform generator
  • 4 digital I/Os: for general monitoring and control
  • USB-powered: no batteries needed
  • Software included: full versions of PicoScope and PicoLog for Windows
  • Linux and OS X support: free beta software available
  • Software development kit: free downloads for Windows, Linux and OS X

The software includes all the advanced features that you get with our top-of-the range scopes, such as spectrum analysis, automated measurements, mask limit testing, serial decoding (subject to bandwidth and sample rate limits) and math channels.

R6.11.7 is ready for download from our website at Home / Downloads. This release contains a number of bugfixes on the way to our next stable (non-beta) version. To remind you, the features that are in beta but not in the current stable version include:

  • New serial decoding protocols (1-Wire, ARINC 429, DCC, DMX512, Ethernet, PS/2, SENT and USB)
  • Faster math channels supporting more data (up to 5m samples)
  • Touch-screen support for zoom and pan

New PicoScope R6.11.8 beta for Linux and OS X

  • Fixes and improvements to serial decoding interface
  • Removed double Apple menu bar (OS X version)
  • Fixed compatibility issues with OS X El Capitan, including pkg installer

Improved Bode plotter for PicoScopes

Bode plotAaron Hexamer has updated his "FRA4PicoScope" frequency response analyzer to support all current PicoScope models (subject to testing). Other new features include gain and phase margin calculation and plotting, faster analysis, as well as a number of bugfixes and improvements.

Read about FRA4PicoScope on our forum and download a free installer for Windows

Please let us know if you have developed an application using a PicoScope SDK. Just log into our forum and post a note.

Tech Tip: Converting the output of a Rogowski coil

When sensing current using a Rogowski coil, the voltage output of the coil is proportional to the rate of change of current so you need to integrate the signal to obtain the current. Luckily, you can do this easily in PicoScope using a math channel.

Go to Tools > Math Channels, click Create, and in the equation editor enter integral(A/c). This assumes that your signal is on channel A. In place of the c you will need to type the value of the coil's sensitivity constant, which depends on its geometry.
