In an AC power transmission system, reactive power is the component of power that oscillates between the source and load without being consumed. True power is the component consumed by the load, hence, performing useful work. A level of reactive power is necessary in the system to ensure functional operation and to maintain stable voltage levels.

When inductive loads are utilized (e.g. motors and transformers), a current lag occurs, causing a voltage drop, which in turn is compensated for by reactive power, which supplies the necessary current. Conversely, when a capacitive load is utilized, a leading current is generated, which can cause higher voltages. Again, reactive power compensates for this by absorbing the excess voltage and allowing the system to stabilise.

Reactive power measurement is available in PicoScope 7 Early Access. You can find out more about reactive power in our A to Z library, or download the software for free on our website.

PicoBYTE #8: You’re testing your PCB wrong!

When probing a signal using an oscilloscope, the standard choice of equipment is a probe with a crocodile clip. This long ground clip, however, can add extra inductive ringing to an otherwise fast edge signal. In the latest video from our PicoBYTE series, James explains how to reduce ringing when probing by using a tool you might already have, and how much of an effect this can have on a fast edge signal.

PicoScope 5000 Series:
Flexible Resolution USB Oscilloscope

The PicoScope 5000 Series can handle a variety of signal types: analog, digital, serial (both high- and low-speed), parallel, audio, video, power distribution, and more!

Our FlexRes® hardware employs multiple high-resolution ADCs at the input channels in different and parallel combinations. These can optimize either the sampling rate to 1 GS/s at 8 bits, the resolution to 16 bits at 62.5 MS/s, or other combinations in between. You can select the most appropriate hardware resolution for the requirements of each measurement.

2 and 4 channel models are available, all featuring a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connection, providing lightning-fast saving of waveforms while retaining compatibility with older USB standards. The product is small and light, and operates silently thanks to its low-power, fanless design.

You can find out more about the specifications, features and capabilities of the PicoScope 5000 Series on our website.

Have your voice heard for a chance to win!
