I recently bought a 2203. while playing with it for the first time I noticed some switching sound coming from inside. Is there a relay internally which produces this noise.

Yes there is, this is normal this happens when it switches ranges. I would assume when you first loaded it, it was on Auotrange and the signals coming in kept on changing the range.
