I would like to be able to detect degradation and signal noise on communications cables, serial and ethernet like cables generally in the range of 9.6 kbit/s - 12 Mbit/s Signals are generally non-repeating but there are heartbeat signal waveforms sent periodically.

I also would like to measure harmonics / noise at 230/400V (I assume I need additions probes for this). These tend to be multiples of 50/60HZ.

Which scope/lead would you recommend?

I reckon you can do this with a 5203/04 since it has the highest bandwidth. So you can see more harmonics out your signals.

However in terms of degradation and noise can you say specifically what kind of measurements you are trying to take?

Specifically - Signal 'flattening' edges are degraded. Spurious electrical noise cross coupling from IGFET etc Variable speed drives. Mains harmonic interference. Ground plain and attena life effects. Monitoring of general electrical noise.

Generally signals are 0-5Volts. If the signal is degraded below 3V the a significant amount of transmission retries occur. Below 2.25V the networks become unusable.

Signal 'regenerators' can be fitted to filter out the noise and clean up the signals / fibre optic sections fitted in problem areas.

Ok in terms of hardware then as I suggested the 5203/04 should be able to measure those frequencies. One thing I will say though is that if you are measuring mains you will need to use an isolated oscilloscope probe that is designed for measuring high voltages, we also sell these.

I do not know the specific measurements you are talking about but if you use our software you will be able to see a spectrum view of the signal coming in.
