parallel port adaptor

I have an old adc100 that I have been using on a old laptop but I now have a newer panasonic toughbook running W2K and I can only get the unit to connect if I use bi-directional port setting when most posts say I should be using uni-directional. I get no readings on the scope on either channel .
I have read a lot of posts about a port adaptor and changing the WIN.INI file but I don't see where to get one, do I need one?
