Here is your monthly Test and Measurement update from Pico Technology.

1.  New Product! PicoScope 3224 Two-Channel High-Resolution PC Oscilloscope

We have just extended the PicoScope 3000 Series of USB PC Oscilloscopes with the new PicoScope 3224. This model is the two-channel version of the highly popular PicoScope 3424, and has the following features:

  • 20 MS/s maximum sampling rate
  • 512,000 sample buffer
  • 12-bit resolution
  • USB 2.0 interface
  • No external power supply required
  • ±20 mV to ±20 V measuring ranges
  • 10 MHz analogue bandwidth and spectrum analyser range
  • Compatibility with our PicoScope and PicoLog software and Windows drivers

The 12-bit resolution makes this oscilloscope suitable for audio and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) analysis, as well as for general electronic repair and laboratory use.

2.  New Features in PicoScope Oscilloscope Software

We have added some new features to PicoScope, our PC oscilloscope software for Windows, for your convenience.

Zoom in horizontally using Ctrl-Drag Down. Draw a downward vertical line with the mouse while holding down the Ctrl key, and PicoScope will zoom in horizontally. The length of the line sets the zoom factor.

Zoom out horizontally using Ctrl-Drag Up. Draw an upward vertical line with the mouse while holding down the Ctrl key, and PicoScope will return to a 2x horizontal zoom.

Scroll horizontally using Ctrl-Left and Ctrl-Right. Use the Ctrl key with the left and right arrow keys. This works whenever you have a horizontal zoom factor selected.

The above functions work in both the Oscilloscope and XY Oscilloscope views.

Save on trigger function now looks for similar PSD files in the save directory and finds the highest numbered trace to start at for subsequent captures. This prevents users accidentally overwriting previously saved traces using the Save on trigger function.

You can download the latest version of PicoScope from our website.

3.  New Automotive Tutorial:
Emissions-Related Components and Actuators

We have added a new article, “Emissions-related components and actuators”, to the series of automotive tutorials on our website. This article examines the components of the engine management system that control the engine's emissions, and explains how to diagnose the causes of overfuelling.

4.  “Electronic Returnless Fuel Systems” Technical Article

Our US distributor, Autonerdz, has added a new Technical Article — “Electronic Returnless Fuel Systems”, by Tom Roberts — to its “Creative Lab Scope Technique“ page. Tom has used our PicoScope 3423 Automotive Oscilloscope Diagnostics Kit to capture the waveforms in the article.

5.  Platinum Resistance Thermometers: New Specifications

We have improved the specifications of one of our platinum resistance thermometers (PRTs) and renamed another.

The SE011 (formerly “Pt100 Class B Sensor”) is now accurate to Class A, so we have renamed it the “Pt100 Class A Sensor”.

The name of the SE012 (formerly “Pt100 1/10 Class A Sensor”) has been corrected to “Pt100 1/10 DIN Class B Sensor”. The accuracy of the sensor itself is unchanged.

6.  Product Spotlight — USB to Parallel Port Adapter

If you have one of our parallel-port-connected oscilloscopes or data loggers but your new computer doesn't have a spare parallel port, then you need the USB to Parallel Port Adapter. Simply plug it into a spare USB port, and you get an extra parallel port suitable for use with any Pico parallel port product.

Note: the USB to Parallel Port Adapter is designed for use only with Pico products.
