1.  Automotive Oscilloscope Kit Wins Another Major Award

The Automotive Diagnostics Kit has won MOTOR magazine's acclaimed 2003 Top 20 Tools award. With a publishing history spanning a century, MOTOR magazine is the definitive automotive trade magazine in the USA and Pico are proud to accept this prestigious award.

The Pico Automotive Diagnostic Kit can be used to measure and test virtually all of the electrical and electronic components and circuits in the modern vehicle including:

  • Ignition (primary & secondary)
  • Injectors & fuel pumps
  • Starter & charging circuits
  • ABS sensors. Crank & cam sensors
  • Lambda, Airflow, knock & MAP sensors
  • Glow plugs / timer relays
  • Relative compression tests

More information can be found at the Pico automotive diagnostics website.

2.  Competition — Design a New PicoScope Logo

If you have a creative flair, then this competition may be for you.

We require a new "PicoScope" logo for use on oscilloscope products and also in our software.

If your design is the one used, we will donate either a ADC-212/50 or ADC-200/100 oscilloscope.

The logo must contain the text "PicoScope" and "PC Oscilloscope" the text for PC Oscilloscope can be smaller than PicoScope. The design must work in both black and white and in colour.

The ideal logo will graphically represent one or more features/benefits of our oscilloscope products.

3.  New Product — FirstLook Automotive Diagnostic Sensor

Last month we announced the launch of the FirstLook sensor designed to work with an oscilloscope to quickly measure the "health" of an engine.

By displaying pressure waves, it helps to quickly identify problems with compression, valves and injectors.Example waveforms from the sensor have now been added into the demo version of the automotive oscilloscope software.

4.  Technical Tip — EnviroMon Converter Addresses

The EnviroMon datalogging and alarm system has a stand alone data logger connected to a network of converters. Different converters are available for parameters such as temperature, voltage, humidity and current.

Each converter on the network must have an unique address. When building large systems you may find multiple converters with the same address. The addresses have to be unique thus the configuration will not complete successfully if units are trying to share a common address.

You change a converter address using the application called 'change converter address'. This program is installed when you install the EnviroMon software.

  • Start Change converter address application.
  • Connect the logger to the PC, only one converter should be connected at a time.
  • Select the new address number and select the port that the logger is connected to.
  • Program the converter.
  • Write the new the number on the converter as a reminder of the converters address.

A list of previous newsletter "technical tips" can be found on the technical tips page.

5.  New Science Experiment

Our library of science experiments for data loggers and oscilloscopes continues to grow. New this month is a Biology experiment looking at exchange principles.

In this experiment, aimed at degree level students, a model heat exchanger is constructed and the water temperature is recorded using a series of thermocouples together with a TC-08 data logger. By altering the direction of water flow the exchange principles of both con-current and counter-current systems can be evaluated.

See this and over seventy other interesting and educational science experiments online.
